Using Special Characters
Specialcharactersarethekindofcharactersyouusuallycannotfinddirectlyonyourkeyboard.In
spiteofthat,someofthemcanbetypedinusingcombinationsofAlternateandControlkeys.
Theproblemusuallydoesnotappearwithyourlanguage-specificcharacters(ä,í,ń,ş,č,Aetc),you
canenterthemdirectlyonthekeyboardorusingAlt+<key_code>combination.alternativelyWin-
dowsutilityCharacterMapcanbeusedtofindappropriatecharacterandpasteittothelabel.
Youmighthaveproblemsusingotherkindofspecialcharacters.Sometimesthereisaneedto
includeacharacterwithASCIIcodebelow32.Theseareso-calledcontrolcharacters.Theycannot
benormallyenteredtolabelingoranyotherapplication.Thereisanalternativemethodofentering
suchcharacters,explainedlaterinthistopic.
Thereareseveralmethodshowspecialcharacterscanbetypedintothelabelingsoftware.
Entering characters with <#hex_code> syntax
Anothermethodofenteringspecialcharactersisusingthesyntax<#hex_code>.Thehex_code
standsforatwo-charactermarkinhexadecimalnumericalsystem.Theappropriatevaluesgofrom0
(decimal0)toFF(decimal255).
Forexample,<#BC>(decimal188)wouldbethesameas<FNC1>,astheybothwouldencodethe
characterwithASCIIcode0188.
Entering characters with Alt+<ASCII_code>
ThismethodisvalidonlyforcharactersthatareaboveASCIIcode32.Atypicalexamplewouldbe
FNCcodesthatareusedtoencodeGS1-128(EAN.UCC128)barcodedata.Thelabelingsoftware
willencodethistypeofbarcodeaccordingtostandardsandnormallyyouwouldnothavetochange
anythingaboutit.However,sometimesitisnecessarytomanuallyaddsuchcharactertolabeldata.

TotypeincharacterforFNC1,pressandholddownleftAltkey,thentypeindigits0188onthe
numerickeyboard.Notetheleadingzero,itismandatory.ReleasetheAltkeyandFNC1character
shouldappear.
